New Sister Site Created Written Monday, June 30, 2008 by Webb Well, with the impending release of the 2.40 firmware on the PS3 and the release of the Trophy system (which is Sony’s version of the gamer reward system), we thought, what better than to broaden our horizons and cater for both consoles. RX has been nestled in a cupboard for the past few weeks coding like a mad man and just in time for Sony’s recent update (Wednesday), as of today, x360a will have a sister site and that will be another baby .org (we couldn’t lose our .org now, could we)?. The funny thing is that the trophies are not retroactive and aren't even guaranteed to be in any 3rd party games for awhile. And the only current games that are getting a patch to add trophies are Super Stardust (which is a very good shooter, actually), Warhawk, and Pain. So in other words, you won't be getting any for playing through MGS 4. Some Sony exec was asked why there isn't any numeric system like what Microsoft has and he said that he doesn't think numbers are important, etc., etc. Then I would ask him why it would be more important for a gamer to get some trophies from a game and gain 'levels' to a gamer profile? It's incredible how stupid they think people in this world are. Sony comes out with a copy of Microsoft's achievement system, years later, rips Microsoft's system, and then tells everyone their trophy thing is better. Now at gaming sites, everyone is getting all psyched for a PS3 even though the system still only has like 3-4 good exclusives and costs more than a 360. I had a PS3 months ago and sold it because it was collecting more dust than my VCR. And this news of trophies doesn't make me want to go rebuy on at all. It's a fun reward system that has already spread to PC gaming and will probably end up as a de facto standard platform feature in the future. You should be happy that the Xbox has innovated and popularized such an influencial and fun system, not complaining that it's being "ripped off". It's just a feature. Obviously it wont be like achievements, it will only be a couple trophies a game. They are supposed to be bragging rights, in the sense you put your top trophies in your "trophy" case so when your friends come to your little sony house, they can view. I like 360 where you just compare and have an overall score. On ps360 you cant just look at the other trophies and compare. This is just a weaker system. PS3 is turning into nintendo. First the semi motion controllers, then creating a virtual environment (like how nintendo has you make little characters). I think if anything, sony ripped off Dead or Alive 4s multiplayer lobby! You get bronze, silver, gold, and platinum for 100%, comparing to friends is easy, each trophy is worth a different ammount of 'experience' which then counts toward you levelling up.
